We are
A Spiritual Journey Percussion Ensemble

Enjoying the adventure of spiritual growth and awareness with music as a medium has brought together this gathering of Chicago-based musicians, dancers, educators, instrument makers, storytellers and designers.
We met somewhere along the path, and began to train and nuture each other in our various areas of expression. Now we blend our visions and our vibrations as we continue to reach out to others with the joyful and healing powers of sound.

Our featured instrument is the beaded Yoruba calabash gourd called the "Sekere," (pronounced "shay-keh-reh"). Its design was inspired by the Yoruba people of Nigeria, West Africa. It provides both a drumming sound as the base is rhythmically struck with the hand, as well as the shaking sound produced by the skirt which is wrapped around it, made of beads or cowrie shells. Other instruments include the Egun gun bell, traditionally used in Yoruba spirituality to remember and honor ancestors. We are even likely to include the use of rainsticks and, yes - spoons! Chants and songs are also provided, accompanied by basic dance choreography, under the guidance of the Ensemble's Director, Jendayi P. Anderson. We welcome you to expand your horizons with us!
